  8. SECTION 1 - Getting Started
  9.  
  10. The following assumes a basic knowledge of DOS:
  11.  
  12. BACKUP:
  13.  
  14.      Backing up the STRING QUARTET files is recommended, for
  15. two reasons:
  16.  
  17.      1. If one copy is destroyed or rendered unusable for
  18.         some reason, you will have a backup copy.
  19.  
  20.      2. If you copy the files onto your hard disk and run
  21.         STRING QUARTET from there, the program will load
  22.         much faster and work faster when it needs to use the
  23.         disk.
  24.  
  25.      To make a backup to a blank floppy diskette, use the
  26. DOS "COPY" command in a similar manner to the following:
  27.  
  28.                    copy  a:*.*  b:
  29.  
  30.      If your knowledge of DOS is limited so that you have
  31. trouble with this command, refer to your DOS manual and look
  32. up "COPY", or ask a friend for assistance.  In the meantime,
  33. STRING QUARTET can be run from the original diskette, but
  34. don't forget, you don't have it backed up!  The standard
  35. practice is to store the original diskette and use the
  36. backup as your working copy.
  37.  
  38.      To copy the files onto your hard disk, first make a
  39. directory to store them in using the DOS "MKDIR" (MD)
  40. command.  You might type the following:
  41.  
  42.                    md  c:\sq
  43.  
  44.      Next, type:
  45.  
  46.                    copy  a:*.*  c:\sq
  47.  
  48.      Again, if these commands are beyond your knowledge of
  49. DOS, you may require assistance.
  50.  
  51.  
  52. CONVENTIONS USED BY STRING QUARTET:
  53.  
  54.      STRING QUARTET's user interface was designed to be as
  55. standard as possible.  A computer user of any experience
  56. should have little trouble.  The first letter of each option
  57. is displayed in a bright color.  Pressing the letter runs
  58. the option.
  59.  
  60.  
  61. Running STRING QUARTET (SQ.EXE):
  62.  
  63.      SQ.EXE must be run from the directory where all the
  64. STRING QUARTET files are stored.  On start-up, SQ.EXE
  65. immediately looks for certain files.  If they are not in the
  66. current directory, the program aborts.
  67.  
  68. Example:  Let's assume for instance your STRING QUARTET
  69. files are stored in a directory called C:\SQ and your
  70. current default directory is C:\WPFILES. If you were to
  71. type:
  72.  
  73.                    c:\sq\sq
  74.  
  75. SQ.EXE would attempt start-up and look in C:\WPFILES for the
  76. required files.  Upon not finding them, the program would
  77. abort.  Here you must change the default directory using the
  78. DOS "CHDIR" (CD) command.  In this case you would type:
  79.  
  80.                    cd  c:\sq
  81.  
  82.      Then type:
  83.  
  84.                    sq
  85.  
  86.  
  87. Running and using PRINT!.EXE:
  88.  
  89.      Included is a file called PRINT!.EXE.  It too must be
  90. run from the proper directory (see instructions above
  91. regarding SQ.EXE).
  92.  
  93. Manual:
  94.  
  95.      This option sends a copy of the manual to your printer. 
  96. When you choose this option, printing does not begin
  97. immediately.  It allows you to exit without printing if you
  98. change your mind.  A large margin has been included to allow
  99. holes to be punched if you wish to keep your manual in a
  100. binder.
  101.  
  102. Order:
  103.  
  104.      This option prints an order form for a registered copy
  105. of STRING QUARTET. 
  106. SECTION 2 - Using STRING QUARTET:
  107.  
  108.  
  109. To run STRING QUARTET type: sq
  110.  
  111.      When the copyright notice appears, pressing most any
  112. key will cause it to disappear.  Press a key again and the
  113. main screen will appear.  Press <H> or <F1> for "HELP".
  114.  
  115.      Press <V>, <I>, <C> or <B> for the instrument you want
  116. to tune.  The current mode is displayed on the status line
  117. at the bottom.  The last instrument setting before you exit
  118. STRING QUARTET will be saved to the file CONFIG.DAT and will
  119. be the start-up setting for the next run.
  120.  
  121.      Notice the numbers 1 through 4 above the fingerboard on
  122. the screen.  The screen opens with the number one string
  123. marked with the menu block.  Use the right and left arrow
  124. keys, or number keys to select different strings.  Once you
  125. have selected the string you want to tune, press <Enter> to
  126. sound the note and press <Enter> again to stop it.  You can
  127. also press the numbers <1> through <4> to select a string
  128. and switch on the sound all in one keystroke.
  129.  
  130. Colors (Color monitors only):
  131.  
  132.      By pressing "L", you can cycle through 10 different
  133. color schemes.  Your last selection will be saved when you
  134. exit.  If you have a monochrome monitor and this option
  135. appears on the menu, your display adapter has caused STRING
  136. QUARTET to detect a color monitor.  You can force a
  137. monochrome display by running STRING QUARTET with a "/m". 
  138.  
  139. Type: sq/m
  140.  
  141. Adjust (Monochrome monitors only):
  142.  
  143.      Pressing "J" displays a screen to help you to properly
  144. set your monitor's brightness and contrast dials.  If you
  145. have a monochrome monitor and this option does not appear on
  146. the menu, force a monochrome display with the "/m".
  147.  
  148. Exit:
  149.  
  150.      As mentioned above, when you exit STRING QUARTET,
  151. certain settings are saved to the file CONFIG.DAT.  If
  152. running STRING QUARTET from a floppy diskette, that same
  153. diskette must be in the drive when you exit so CONFIG.DAT
  154. will be found.
  155.  
  156. SECTION 3 - Technical Support
  157.  
  158.  
  159.      Technical support is available to registered users of
  160. STRING QUARTET.  The support is limited to help in using the
  161. software.  You may write to Celista Software at the address
  162. listed below giving your name, address and telephone number
  163. along with your STRING QUARTET registration number (found on
  164. the diskette label).  If there seems to be a problem with
  165. the software, please explain in detail, what steps led to
  166. the problem, whether it happens repeatedly etc., and provide
  167. the version number of DOS you're using, details of your
  168. hardware and any software in memory at the time the problem
  169. occurred.
